About this deal

In truth, he could be a scary monster when he went to work for Motherwell, Rangers and Scotland, but he was content most of all at the most gentle of sports. But it was for Scotland - again at Hampden - that came a moment which epitomised what a fine footballer he was. This was not to forget the big world outside. Rather, as he later wrote, it was “to become more fully human”. But, “little did I dream of what sort of break up/down/through I was to go through to become fit for that vision.” He will always be remembered as a no-nonsense defender but with a reputation that he believed was exaggerated. In his latter years, Tom continued to support the Club. Most recently, Tom hosted hospitality events as a match day ex-player, visiting the lounges and sharing stories with guests. He was also well known amongst many RSCs across the UK and beyond, his passion for Rangers never waned.

Appointed Dunfermline Athletic manager in September 1982, he moved on within a year, to become assistant manager at Morton under Tommy McLean before both moved on to Motherwell between 1984 and 1994, leading the ‘Steelmen’ to Scottish Cup success in 1991, into Europe, and to third place in the Premier Division before he went on to Hearts. One of my earliest footballing memories was watching, on TV, Tam Forsyth use the studs and sole of his boot to score the winner in the 1973 cup final, and break my young heart.

Seventy-one is no age at all – massive respect Jaws. If ever the term Rangers Legend applied, you are one to me.

Global building product manufacturer, Sika, has appointed Tom Forsyth as General Manager, a role that will see him build on the continued growth of the company across its multiple UK markets. His Scotland career began at Motherwell and he went on to win two British Championships with the help of victories in both his appearances against England, in 1976 and 1977, also captaining his country once. He won his 22nd and final cap at the 1978 World Cup.

International recognition followed, firstly at Under-23 level on February 24, 1971, in a 2-2 draw with England at Hampden, then less than four months later, at full international level, in a 0-1 defeat to Denmark in Copenhagen. Forsyth became a favourite at Fir Park until he made the move to Ibrox months after Rangers won the European Cup Winners' Cup. Forsyth is survived by his three children, Karen, Julie and David, from his marriage to Linda, who died last year. In later years Tom opened a nursery whilst assisting his wife in her florist’s shop. He was never far away from football, coaching youngsters at the local school whilst acting as a matchday host in the hospitality suites at Ibrox whilst always finding time to indulge his love of bowling, gardening and golf. I lifted my seven-year-old brother over the turnstile and my mates helped with "shoulder" duty during the game. I loved the guy! My son and I were discussing "real" centre half's during the Barca game midweek and I just thought that Tam wrote that particular book.He had been purged of his old self, his false self, that had led MacLeod and others to view him as a “blue-eyed, whitened sepulchre and too-good-to-be-true neurotic do-gooder.” He felt now “at the commencement of life proper.” The new appointment will see him build on the already well-established Sika brand in the UK. In 2021, the company is aiming to achieve 15% growth in net sales whilst maintaining profitability levels. Major focuses that will help the company achieve this centre on key initiatives to grow e-commerce channels, further develop its network of specifiers, strengthening relationships with key specialist distributors and add to the Sika contractor networks. The company will also continue to focus efforts on developing inter-company business.
