Description

From the opening first scene, and the literal opening of an eye, you will behold the massive amount of detail to be found here in 4K, but more on that later. Keenly utilising HDR and WCG, the image also has plenty of impressive tones that pop with intensity - sometimes strikingly used, sometimes subtly implemented, but always perfectly delivered. It's a cleaner, slicker and richer looking image, the 4K Blu-ray allowing the film to showcase its sumptuous aesthetics. While Blade Runner felt small and contained, 2049 aims for an epic and sweeping quality that's not far off David Lean's widescreen images.

Blade Runner 2049 feels so very much like its predecessor, but so starkly different at the same time. The 4K highlights the quality of Deakin's lighting and Dennis Gassner's fantastic production design, resulting in a fabulous looking disc. Given that Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel to one of the most celebrated science fiction films ever made, its collection of bonus features is a bit on the anemic side of things. As I said in my review for the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of Blade Runner, Dolby Atmos adds a lot to the show.

While not the brightest or best contrast given the atmospheric haze, we can already see extra detail with sharper edges of the solar panels.

I literally would, and could go on for many more paragraphs talking about the detail, if I didn’t stop myself, and just leave it simply put: it’s downright visually amazing. DSD (3) Player Software (3) S/PDIF (3) SINAD (3) Sabaj (3) Tagging (3) USB Noise (3) AI (2) AMPT (2) Audio Demo (2) Auditory Acuity (2) Balanced vs.Background environments are rich with fine detail, with every setting stunningly realised here, from the clinical police station location to the muddy protein farm, to the golden Egyptian pyramid-like Wallace headquarters, to the unhealthily orange desert, with that last environment bearing the closest similarity to some of the textured locales in the original. Gosling is an actor that I feel is a bit underrated in Hollywood, and seems to still be typecast as “the pretty boy”.
